Boat Seats As Emergency Floatation Devices
Safety always needs to be a boatman's first concern, for himself, for his passengers, and for other people
sharing the waters. Everything from the boat itself to the boat seats should have been checked before departure to
ensure that it is in working condition.
In most cases, safety vests are highly recommended (and are necessary by law in many jurisdictions). But it's
also a good idea to bring some extra floatation devices, and this is where good boat seats come in handy.
Many boat seats are equipped with strap-off cushions that can be used as floatation devices in emergency cases.
While all cushions flat, not all have enough buoyancy to act as emergency floatation devices though. This is why
you are advised to check if the ones on your boat can be used as such, and if you are considering buying new seats
or cushions, it may make sense to check that they have a high buoyancy as a feature.
When planning to use boat seats as floatation devices, there are some things that you should be aware of. These
include:
The right kind of maintenance: Seats and cushions that are intended to double as floatation devices need to be
maintained properly, cleaning them regularly and making sure that they are not ripped, teared or otherwise damaged
in a way that might render them unsuitable for use in the event of an emergency. If they are removable, cushions
that can easily be replaced if they are damaged.
Regular testing: You don't want to find out that a high-buoyancy cushion has a problem when an emergency arises,
so it would be best to check their suitability on regular occasions. Throw 'em in the water and see if they
float!
Real security: Floating cushions can provide an extra level of security, but they are no substitute for life
vests and other emergency apparatuses. A viable floating boat seat does not eliminate the need to have real life
vests onboard a boat. Whether your vessel is a small fishing skiff or a built for speed motor races, as an owner
everyone's safety should be your top concern.
Boat sports are a great way to get away from the daily grind and out to the great outdoors. Safety should never
be taken for granted, especially out on the water. To ensure every trip is a lovely one, you need to make sure that
all the required gear is onboard. From life vests to safety flares and floating boat seats, they can all be of
importance.
